I received an email today from the PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Gays and Lesbians for those of you not in the know) group that I belong to. It was a call to action to contact my senators concerning Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. I am completely in favor of getting rid of DADT, but the following quote in the email really bothered me:
“Is it just me, or is it completely absurd that Senate Republicans would hold troops’ funding hostage, just so they can ensure that lesbian and gay soldiers have to keep lying or be fired?”
What? Perhaps the realization that these two things should NOT be tied is exactly the reason why both Knights Out and OutServe asked that the repeal of DADT not interfere with passing of the fiscal year 2011 Defense Authorization Act.
Get your facts straight and stop misleading the public to demonize your opponents. I could just as well say:
“Is it just me, or is it completely absurd that a small minority would hold troops’ funding hostage, just so they can ensure their agenda receives media attention?”
Yes, repeal DADT, but please find a way to do it that doesn’t put the men and women, gay and straight, who are already serving, in danger because the FY11 Authorization doesn’t pass.
